Poster for the 10th Exhibition at the Vienna Secession

  • Ferdinand Andri (1871–1956)
  • 1901
  • Color lithograph on paper
  • Leopold Museum, Vienna

This poster was made for the 10th Exhibition of the Vienna Secession. Ferdinand Andri generally preferred strong and clear colors, but he used softer shades of turquoise for this work. The wavy decorative lines and the reflection of the bushes by a lake suggest a water landscape. What he has depicted is left to the viewer’s imagination. Andri has materialized the aesthetics of the *Jugendstil, the decorative arts movement of the Vienna Secession.

* Jugendstil is the German term for the Art Nouveau, a decorative art style that emerged in late–nineteenth-century Europe. It is characterized by nature-inspired curved forms of plants and flowers, and the use of decorative lines.
